Bet Dwarka to Somnath: 260 km and Why You Need an Overnight Stay

Many pilgrims planning the Dwarka–Bet Dwarka–Somnath circuit look at a map and wonder why the Bet Dwarka to Somnath journey is so long. The geographic reality is straightforward: Bet Dwarka is an island. It is connected to the mainland only by the ferry crossing to Okha. Once back in Okha, you are on the north-western tip of the Saurashtra peninsula, and Somnath is at the south of the same peninsula. The road from Okha to Somnath must traverse the length of the peninsula, through Dwarka, Nageshwar area, Jamnagar district, and then south through Saurashtra to Somnath. There is no bridge from Bet Dwarka island directly to a closer mainland point, and no ferry route to Somnath.

The three segments that compose the journey: Bet Dwarka ferry to Okha (3.5 km, 20-30 min, ₹40-50), Okha to Dwarka by road (36 km, 1 hour), Dwarka to Somnath by road (236 km, 4-4.5 hours). Total distance is approximately 275 km counting the ferry but the commonly cited road distance after reaching the mainland is 272 km (36 + 236). Total travel time including the ferry is realistically 5.5 to 6 hours without significant stops. With a meal break and a few minutes at Nageshwar (which sits on this route), it becomes a 7-hour journey.

This is the key reason why the overnight-in-Dwarka plan is strongly preferred over attempting Bet Dwarka and Somnath in a single day. A pilgrim who tries to do Bet Dwarka darshan in the morning and drive all the way to Somnath in the afternoon will arrive at Somnath tired after a very long day, potentially missing the Sandhya Aarti that is the principal reason most pilgrims want to reach Somnath by evening. Splitting the journey over two days resolves this entirely.

Completing Bet Dwarka and reaching Somnath on the same day is possible but constitutes a demanding travel day. The itinerary: depart your Dwarka hotel or guesthouse by 6:30-7 AM for Okha (1 hour, 36 km). Board the first or early ferry to Bet Dwarka (6 AM departure if possible). Darshan at Bet Dwarka (8-10 AM). Return ferry to Okha by 10:30-11 AM. Drive immediately toward Somnath via Dwarka (do not stop at Dwarkadhish unless darshan is already done, you will not have time). Continue from Dwarka to Somnath (236 km, 4-4.5 hours). Arrive Somnath by 5:30-6 PM for the Sandhya Aarti.

This plan works on paper but has no margin for error. A delayed ferry, heavier than expected traffic, or a longer queue at Bet Dwarka temple breaks the entire schedule. It also means you are in a vehicle for the better part of 6-7 hours on top of the morning ferry and temple activity. Most pilgrims who have tried this report arriving at Somnath exhausted rather than in the composed and receptive state that a major Jyotirlinga visit deserves. This same-day option is best reserved for pilgrims with a fixed departure date who have no other choice.

Transport for the same-day journey: a private vehicle hired for the full circuit (Dwarka-Okha-Dwarka-Somnath) is the only practical option. GSRTC buses cannot be coordinated across these legs with sufficient flexibility to maintain the schedule. A taxi from Dwarka for the full day/circuit will cost ₹3,500-5,000 depending on negotiation and the driver's flexibility. Book this the evening before and confirm the early departure time.

Once you are back in Dwarka and ready to proceed to Somnath, your transport options are private taxi, GSRTC bus, or train (though no direct train exists). A private taxi from Dwarka to Somnath is the most comfortable and flexible option, ₹2,500-3,500 for the vehicle one way, 4-4.5 hours, door to door at Somnath. If you hired a vehicle for the Bet Dwarka day trip, negotiate with the same driver for the Somnath leg, they may offer a combined rate for both days of driving.

GSRTC buses from Dwarka to Somnath take 5-6 hours and cost ₹200-350 per person. Direct services are limited, check the schedule at Dwarka bus stand the evening before. Most Somnath-bound services depart in the morning (5-8 AM), which does not align with the post-Rajbhog 12:30 PM departure recommended for the timing plan above. An afternoon bus may exist but it is less reliable. If taking the bus, be flexible about which aarti you catch at Somnath, you may arrive for the later evening program rather than the Sandhya Aarti precisely at sunset.

Somnath Sandhya Aarti timing reference: the aarti is at sunset, which varies from approximately 6:00-6:30 PM (winter) to 7:00-7:30 PM (summer). The Jai Somnath Light and Sound show runs at 8 PM and is separately ticketed (₹100-200 per person). Both are worth targeting. Staying one night in Somnath after arrival allows you to see both the Sandhya Aarti at sunset and the morning Mangla Aarti before departing, another argument for the two-day structured approach rather than the rushed same-day journey.
