Rajkot to Dwarka: 215 km, The Gateway City That Most Pilgrims Pass Through

Of all the cities in Gujarat, Rajkot plays the most important gateway role for Dwarka pilgrims who are coming from outside the state. While Ahmedabad is the state capital and has more flights, Rajkot sits 215 km from Dwarka, significantly closer than Ahmedabad's 450 km. For a pilgrim flying from Delhi or Mumbai who wants to minimise total travel time, landing at Rajkot and driving directly to Dwarka is a faster and more direct approach than routing through Ahmedabad.

Rajkot airport (IATA: RAJ) has expanded its connectivity in recent years. IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and other carriers operate on the Rajkot route. From Delhi, the flight is approximately 1.5-2 hours. From Mumbai, about 1 hour. Landing at Rajkot by 10-11 AM, a pilgrim can reach Dwarka by 2:30-3 PM and be in position for the evening Uthapan Aarti at Dwarkadhish Temple at 5 PM on the same day, a same-day arrival and darshan that is very achievable via Rajkot but considerably more difficult via the train from Delhi or Mumbai.

Rajkot also serves as a major hub for trains from Ahmedabad and Mumbai on their way to Okha and Dwarka. The long-distance trains (Saurashtra Mail, Dwarka Express) all pass through Rajkot, making it the logical interchange point for connecting passengers from central Gujarat and the areas south of Ahmedabad. Many pilgrim groups board the train at Rajkot rather than Ahmedabad for this reason.

GSRTC operates regular bus services from Saurashtra Bus Stand in Rajkot to Dwarka. The journey takes approximately 4-4.5 hours including intermediate stops. Standard buses cost around ₹200, and semi-AC or AC services (when available) cost ₹300-350. The frequency is good, buses typically depart every 2-3 hours through the morning and early afternoon. Evening departures are less frequent.

Private bus operators also run on this route, particularly during pilgrimage peak season. These are typically AC Volvo sleeper coaches for the overnight run. Booking through redBus or MakeMyTrip gives you access to the private operators' schedules and fares, which vary from ₹350-600 depending on operator and timing.

The bus drops you at Dwarka bus stand. From there, an auto-rickshaw to Dwarkadhish Temple costs ₹40-60. The bus stand is slightly further from the main temple area than the railway station, but both are equally manageable. If your hotel is booked in advance and is near the temple, confirm the exact walking distance with your hotel, many budget hotels and dharamshalas are within 500 metres of Dwarkadhish Temple and may not need a separate auto from the bus stand.

Whether you arrive from Rajkot by bus, train, or private car, Dwarka is a compact city and orientation is straightforward. The Dwarkadhish Temple spire is visible from many points in the city and is the natural landmark to navigate toward. The railway station is 1 km from the temple on the northern side. The bus stand is on the east side, roughly 1.5-2 km from the temple. Hotels cluster in the streets between the station and the temple, and again along the lanes leading to Gomti Ghat.

If you are driving from Rajkot and arrive with your own vehicle, note that private vehicles are not permitted in the lanes immediately around Dwarkadhish Temple. Paid parking is available on the approach roads. Walk the last 200-500 metres to the temple gate. This applies to autos, cars, and bikes alike, the inner lanes are pedestrian-only.
