Dwarka Station to Bet Dwarka: 38 km + Ferry, How Pilgrims Do It

Reaching Bet Dwarka from Dwarka station is unlike any other temple visit in the region because it involves two distinct modes of transport. First, you cover roughly 36 km by road from Dwarka to Okha, the last major coastal town on the peninsula. Then, from Okha jetty, you board a ferry for a 3.5 km crossing over the Gulf of Kutch to reach Bet Dwarka island. Neither leg is particularly long or difficult, but pilgrims who underestimate the two-step nature of this journey often feel rushed.

Dwarka railway station sits almost at the center of town, barely a kilometer from the Dwarkadhish temple. The road to Okha runs northwest along the NH47 and is a smooth, flat highway through open coastal plains. There is nothing particularly scenic about this stretch, it passes through Mithapur, which hosts a major chemical plant, and several small fishing villages. Most pilgrims do this stretch by bus, auto, or taxi depending on their budget and group size.

The ferry crossing from Okha is the highlight of the journey. The government-operated boats are functional wooden or metal vessels that carry pilgrims and locals alike. The 20-30 minute crossing offers views of the Arabian Sea on one side and the Gulf of Kutch on the other. Dolphins are occasionally spotted in these waters during the early morning hours. By the time you step onto Bet Dwarka island, the spiritual atmosphere of the place, believed to be where Lord Krishna actually resided, is palpable.

Okha jetty is the departure point for all ferries to Bet Dwarka. The jetty itself is a busy port area, it handles fishing vessels, cargo boats, and pilgrim ferries simultaneously. The government ferry ticket counter is clearly marked and the queues move reasonably well except during festival periods. Tickets are purchased on the spot and there is no advance booking system.

The government ferry is a flat-bottomed wooden boat that holds 40-60 passengers. During peak pilgrim season (October to March), multiple boats operate simultaneously. Sudarshan Setu carries road traffic and pedestrians across the same channel and is open at all hours. For most pilgrims, the government ferry is the standard and preferred choice.

During monsoon months (June to September), ferry operations can be suspended on days of high waves or strong winds. If you are planning a monsoon visit, check with locals or your hotel about ferry conditions the night before. The crossing itself is generally safe but can be choppy in rough weather, and passengers who are susceptible to motion sickness should take precautions.

For most pilgrims coming from Dwarka, a day trip to Bet Dwarka works smoothly if you start early. Here is how a typical well-planned day looks. Leave Dwarka station or your hotel by 7:00 AM. Take a GSRTC bus or shared auto to Okha (45-50 minutes). Reach Okha jetty by 8:00-8:30 AM. Take the government ferry (20-30 minutes). Arrive at Bet Dwarka by 9:00 AM. Complete temple darshan and island walk by noon. Take the return ferry by 12:30 PM. Reach Okha by 1:00 PM, have lunch, and be back in Dwarka by 2:30-3:00 PM. This leaves the afternoon free for Dwarkadhish temple darshan or Gomti Ghat.

If you also want to include Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, which lies 17 km from Dwarka on the same road to Okha, you will need to start earlier, around 6:00-6:30 AM, and hire a private auto or taxi for the full circuit. The Nageshwar darshan takes 1-1.5 hours, so adding it at the beginning of your day means you reach Okha slightly later, around 10-11 AM. This is still viable as long as you complete the ferry crossing and darshan by 12:30 PM when the temple closes for afternoon break.
